Chapter 3 - The Calm Before the Coffee

The alarm blared at 5:30 AM, slicing through the quiet stillness of the room. Aashvi groaned, fumbling for her phone on the nightstand. Today was the day. The first day of college. The day everything was supposed to be perfect.

She sat up and looked at Aavya, who was currently a human burrito, wrapped tightly in her duvet and snoring softly.

"Aavya uthja yaar...humein mandir bhi Jana hai time se wrna fir aaj college ke first day par crowd milega late ho jayenge" Aashvi said, nudging her best friend's shoulder.

("Aavya! Wake up, broo!! We need to hit the temple and get to college before the crowd swallows us whole")

" bas 5 minute or mummy" Aavya mumbled in her sleepy voice into her pillow.

("Five more minutes, Mom...")

"abey hm ab Delhi mein Hain apne ghar mein nhi hain uthja bhaiii.....and if we're late, those Classical Dance Society forms will be gone. Like, forever," Aashvi threatened. That did the trick. Aavya sat up instantly, her hair a mess but her eyes wide.

( girl we are in Delhi now, not in our homes wake up!!!)

"okay okay fine I am awake now"Aavya said, still in her sleepy voice.

The next hour was a blur of chaos and excitement. Aashvi chose a white chikankari kurta....simple, elegant, and very "her." She braided her hair neatly, tucked a small silver bindi on her forehead, and put on her favorite jhumkas. Looking in the mirror, she felt like a proper classical dancer.

Aavya, true to her vibe, hopped into a pair of jeans and a bright top, looking ready to take on the world.

Before heading to the campus, they made their stop at the temple nearby. The scent of incense and the sound of the morning bells always had a way of grounding both Aashvi and Aavya. She closed her eyes, offering a silent prayer: "Please, let today go well. Just let me get that form."

As they hopped into an auto-rickshaw, Aashvi kept checking her bag every two minutes due to nervousness.

"Relax Aashvi!!! Don't worry too much you will get that form for sure" Aavya said squeezing her hand to calm her down.

Aashvi smiled, feeling a bit better. The sun was out, the breeze was cool, and for a moment, she really believed today would be her "Golden Day."

The auto-rickshaw pulled up right in front of the massive arched gates of City University. As Aashvi  and Aavya stepped out, they took a moment to just... breathe. The campus was huge. Red brick buildings, sprawling green lawns, and a sea of students who all looked like they knew exactly where they were going.

"Okay, this is it,"

Aavya said, hitching her backpack higher on her shoulder. "Official college girls. No more school uniforms, no more boring assemblies."

Aashvi laughed, but her eyes were busy scanning the crowd.

"It's a bit overwhelming, isn't it? I feel like a tiny fish in a very large, very expensive pond."

"Don't get all psychological on me already," Aavya teased, nudging her.

"Now, come on. We need to find our departments. I have Commerce in the North Block, and I think yours is... somewhere else?"

"South Block,"

Aashvi replied, looking at the digital map on her phone that made absolutely no sense.

They spotted a group of seniors standing near the fountain, looking effortlessly cool in their college hoodies. Aashvi walked up to them, feeling a bit shy.

"Excuse me? Hi,"

she said, offering a small, polite smile.

"Could you tell us where the Psychology and Commerce departments are?"

One of the girls, a senior with blue-streaked hair, looked up from her phone.

"Welcome to the college, freshers. Commerce is straight past the cafeteria, that big glass building. Psychology is way across the other side, near the old library, South Block, third floor."

"Thank you so much!"

Aashvi said, feeling a little more settled.

She turned to Aavya.

"Looks like we're splitting up for a bit. You go find your finance nerds, and I'm going to go hunt down the admin office for that dance form before I head to class."

"Text me the second you get it!"

Aavya called out, already heading toward the glass building.

"And don't get lost, Aashu! Use your compass!"

Aashvi waved her off and started walking toward the South Block. She felt a strange mix of excitement and nerves. She kept her folder of all the important documents tucked under her arm, her eyes searching for the admin wing. The campus was buzzing with energy, and for the first time, it felt real.

She was just a few corridors away from the administrative office....and a few minutes away from a collision she never saw coming........
